MC Gives Back 2011 – Cambodia

Next week, a group of MC staff will be traveling from the United States to Cambodia to give back. We will be partnering with Young Life Ministries, a customer of Maintenance Connection utilizing our flagship facility maintenance software. Young Life currently uses Maintenance Connection’s CMMS to manage facilities within the organization’s youth camps across the US. Through a partnership with Young Life Expeditions, the trip to Cambodia will be a great experience for the MC team as well as the team that currently leads Young Life’s efforts in the country. This will also be the first of what we expect to be many more trips like this in the future through our MC Gives Back initiative.

During this week, Maintenance Connection will continue normal operations. The remaining staff will be “all hands on deck” ensuring that customers are supported and have the same response time as normal.

Stay connected with updates from the team
by visiting www.MCGivesBack.com all next week.

Young Life currently operates several community centers Phnom Penh where local youth have a safe place to do school work and spend time with friends. The leaders at each center build relationships with the students, provide training, and take every opportunity to invest in their lives. Each of the centers in the country’s capitol city has a computer lab where teens can learn valuable skills creating opportunities for their success. Part of our gives back initiative in Cambodia is to provide necessary support and upgrades to their computers in the labs. We will be teaching basic Microsoft Office courses, and may even have the opportunity to spend time teaching conversational English. We will be assessing their facilities and providing a bit of manual labor to paint, build, or do whatever we can to spruce things up a bit. We hope to learn about the culture and take a short break from our busy schedules to do something that we hope will make a difference.

We leave September 30th and will be posting frequent updates during the week of October 3-7 as we give back to Young Life Cambodia. Be sure to visit www.MCGivesBack.com or visit Maintenance Connection on Facebook for daily updates.

Summertime Fun – Beaver Creek, CO

Each summer, the Maintenance Connection staff comes together for a little fun as well as time to connect as a team. If you have ever been to Colorado in the summer, you know how picture perfect it can be.

Among many other activities, we tried to not drown on the Arkansas River, we caught a few record setting (at least that is what we told people) trout, as well as a few hours on ATVs. Here is a highlight reel put together by one of our staff. Let us know if you have any ideas where we should go next year. We are always looking for a new adventure!

Inside MC – Meet the Team – Steve

As an Implementation Consultant for Maintenance Connection, Steve Gustafson enjoys working with clients from many different industries and learning about their unique business processes. In his year since joining MC, he has already implemented 40 clients from 15 different states. Steve was especially appreciative of a recent opportunity to travel to Australia to provide customer training, partaking in “down under customs” such as driving on the wrong side of the road, mingling with some of the local wildlife (koalas and kangaroos), and eating shrimp on the Barbie with our Maintenance Connection AU Team.

Steve feels fortunate to have been raised in Colorado, where he has taken full advantage of the beautiful environment by mountain biking, skiing, fishing and hiking. Through both high school and college, Steve played football and kept busy with extensive extracurricular activities. While attending the University or Northern Colorado, he became very involved in student government and the Greek community, even serving as the student body president. The highlight of his college experience, however, was meeting his lovely wife Erin. Steve and Erin now reside in Centennial, a suburb of Denver, with their three rather rambunctious sons, Braden (4), Conner (3), and Carson (1).

Steve has a special involvement in Over the Rainbow Association, a non-profit organization founded by his grandparents. Over the Rainbow is dedicated to providing independent living solutions for individuals with physical disabilities, such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. The organization was formed by a group of Chicago area parents, concerned about their children’s future. Steve considers his Uncle Bob, who has cerebral palsy and has been confined to a wheelchair his whole life, to be one of the most influential people in his life. He is inspired by his uncle’s ability to maintain the best disposition and virtually always wear a broad smile, even though he encounters adversity every day.

Steve has always been amazed at the personal growth and satisfaction that comes from helping others and encourages all to get behind a cause of their choosing. If anyone would like to learn more about the Over the Rainbow Association, visit their website at http://www.otrassn.org/about-us .

Inside MC – Meet the Team – Paul

Paul Chen, who joined our Sales Team in April of last year, enjoys working with prospective customers to determine how Maintenance Connection can best meet their needs. He finds it very rewarding to hear customer success stories and share these with organizations in the decision making process.

Paul and his lovely wife of 8 years, Carol, were born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States in their youth. Paul arrived in the US at the age of thirteen with limited English skills, but worked hard to master the language. Within nine months, he had improved his skills dramatically, allowing him to attend high school without any special ESL instruction. Paul spent his high school and young adult years in Seattle, and now lives in Denver where he and Carol have resided for four years.

Although Paul and Carol have no children, they enjoy hosting international students so their house is always full of young people!  In addition to helping international students adjust to life in the US, Paul is very active in his church, helping to lead the Youth Group and providing Mandarin Chinese translation and interpretive services.

Paul, pictured below visiting his family in Taiwan, relishes every opportunity to travel back. As an AVID sports fan, he actually hopes to someday move back to Taiwan and open a sports bar!

In the meantime, he must settle for cheering on his favorite teams from the Northwest from home. While still recovering from the Stanley Cup loss of his beloved Vancouver Canucks, Paul is looking forward to next fall when he can cheer on the Seattle Seahawks and the University of Washington Huskies!

Inside MC – Meet the Team – Ken

Since joining our Customer Support Team last September, Ken Shampo has shown an unusual zeal for problem solving. Ken enjoys interacting with customers on all support issues, but has shown a penchant for working through complex issues that require extensive problem solving and organization skills!

Ken has an eclectic background that includes 13 years in the military, primarily as a “rocket launcher”. After joining the military at a young age, Ken joined an MLRS training unit (Multiple Launch Rocket Systems), initially serving in the hatch where rockets are launched. Throughout his tenure with the military, Ken advanced to Platoon Sergeant where he directed training missions for the full platoon. After retiring from the military, Ken returned to school where he obtained his BS in Accounting. Impressively, he then invested a couple of years pursuing a second degree in engineering, prior to joining the private sector in the software industry.

Ken has lived in Kimberly, Wisconsin (south of Green Bay) for the past four years with his wife Jenny and eight year old son, Xander. While Ken considers himself a sports fan, he quickly learned that one has “never met a true sports fan until they have lived in the Green Bay Area”J. Ken’s family, pictured below, enjoys the outdoors a great deal – hiking, camping, canoeing and riding bikes. In the winter, they escape the cold weather by making frequent visits to the gym or “Y”, playing basketball and racquetball.

Ken’s family also enjoys traveling on the weekends, exploring local spots like Chicago, Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Dells. For longer vacations, Disney Resorts are a favorite. In the picture below, Ken and Xander are shown at Disneyland with Jack and Sally from “Nightmare Before Christmas”, apparently a family favorite!

While we at MC may not benefit much from his rocket launch experience, truth be told, Ken brings an impressive set of organization skills from his military training. He received an Army Commendation Medal for developing a system that organizes unit training rooms – a process that became the standard for all units in Korea where he was stationed. We have put those skills to good use, tasking Ken with a project to enhance our reporting library. So, next time you are working on a tricky report request – look for Ken on the other end of the chat or support line!
